Julien believes that its not enough to be content from one burst of innovation or creativity. He talks about how Laid Back coalesced from an amalgamation of new web services, his own interests and personal beliefs. He emphasises that none of these projects are a solitary exercise, and that all of his stories involve collaborations between many people across both the physical and digital worlds.

Cracker Digest: A Testament to Facebook Groups

Facebook is beginning to getting jarring at times, but his playlist highlights all things great about it! A year ago some people I do not personally know (but must have some distant connection to) made this group called ‘Crackers’. The purpose to share cracking tunes. Very simple idea and bit by bit it has grown organically, the only rule is post timeless classics.

Its a closed group and over time people have been inviting their own friends who like cracking tunes, now we are 90 people deep! This playlist is a fraction of the output and it is very good. This highlights why collaboration in the pursuit of a an simple idea can yield such amazing results.

A soulful mix with some classic gems, one of my personal favourites Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves the Sunshine! When ever we think about the DJ we tend to perceive pumping techno or dub-step. But the DJ really found their audiences in the funk, soul and disco era

Filter Music

This is a cool website that filters internet radio stations. I just had an uplifting sunday with Dance Grove, their station is in the Funk/Soul/DIsco category!

How Music Travels – The Evolution of Western Dance Music | Thomson Blog

It is really hard to describe how music has traveled from banging bones together to the MPC2000 chopping up samples. But this infograph is like the Charles Darwin for music! Its pretty amazing; if you drag the time line just before 1972, then press play. You will notice that the creation of new music styles explodes. This may have something to do with the release of the Technic SL-1200  and it may not….

In Tony Terells opinion the Technic SL-1200  was “the most important musical instrument of the last two-and-a-half decades.” And even the Science Museum has one in their collection.
